The Ashokan Watershed Stream Management Program’s Family Fun & Fish Day was a great success on Saturday, despite the torrential rain. We had about 70 people there. There was a lot of excitement, and lots of kids caught their first fish: sunfish, perch, and even a couple little bass. DEC provided fishing rods for everyone to fish with, and the kids were allowed to take home a brand-new kid’s fishing rod. AWSMP provided crafts and lunch. Jody Hoyt and Todd Spire, from the Ashokan Pepacton Watershed Chapter, and myself were on hand to bait hooks, help with casting, release fish when needed, and give encouragement. The program started at 11, but at noon a whopper of a thunderstorm swept through. We all huddled under the shelter and I grilled hamburgers & hotdogs. Then the skies cleared up and everyone went back to fishing. All in all, it was a lot of fun.
