From Anti-flood action expected this month in Phoenicia

Apparently the back pressure from the powerful Esopus current stops the gravel that rolls along, forcing it to collect and make the stream bed higher and higher. There are photos from the early decades of last century showing a steam shovel in the Stony Clove scooping out tons of gravel to make way for water to get under the bridge.
